CFT, UTLA launch new radio spots for fair tax solution to budget problem Print E-mail

June 22 — The California Federation of Teachers and United Teachers Los Angeles announced today that they will be running sixty second radio spots in Los Angeles to tell legislators and the governor they need to solve the state's budget problem with progressive tax policies, not by wrecking the future of students and their teachers.  The spots feature the voice of pink-slipped middle school teacher Julie Van Winkle, who tells her listeners that whether she is able to return in the fall to her classroom or not, her students still deserve a decent education, and it's a matter of conscious political choice by legislators and the governor, not some preordained inevitability, whether that can happen.

At left, in pink, is Laney student Sarah French, and to her right is Linda Leu, of Health Access California.

Send a letter to your legislators

California is facing the most severe budget crisis since the passage of Prop 13 in 1978. In many ways it is even worse today, as we have already experienced many years of large cuts to public education and social services.
